Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus), Heartwood Forest, Sandridge, Hertfordshire, 14/03/2012. It was a perfect, sunny, calm evening. I watched 2 SEOs hunting over the grassy meadows. They were oblivious to the horse riders, cyclists, dog walkers, joggers etc. The owls would swoop past, quite close and then off to hover for prey. The air was alive with the sound of Skylarks and it really was quite a magical evening. I was very lucky when one of the birds came to rest on this sapling tree. I ran down along the side of the hedge, hidden from the bird, to get within photographic range. A break in the hedge came at just the right point and the owl let me take a load of shots before carrying on its evenings work.
