Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea), Startop's End Reservoir, Buckinghamshire, 02/04/2013. The bird had just finished washing in the shallows of the shoreline in the north corner before flying to the concrete shelf. It then proceeded to preen and sort out its feathers. This shot was mid-fluff-up.
The car thermometer read 4 deg C, but in the strong, bitter NE winds, it felt more like -2 deg C, in spite of the rare appearance of sunshine. The Water Pipit was associating with the Wheatear along the NW bank. Its tertial feathers are almost fully grown and the tail feathers are well on the way to maturity. I suspect both birds will leave at the weekend when the winds are due to change direction.
