Red-flanked Bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus)
Red-flanked Bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus) [1st winter male], Stiffkey Wood, Stiffkey, Norfolk, 24/10/2012. Norfolk was covered in thick mist and fog all day, with accompanying drizzle and rain at times. Visibility and light were extremely poor so I was pleased to get any kind of record of this lovely little vagrant. This Old World Flycatcher is a migratory insectivorous species breeding in mixed coniferous forest with undergrowth in northern Asia and northeastern Europe, from Finland east across Siberia to Kamchatka and south to Japan. It winters mainly in southeastern Asia, in the Indian Subcontinent, the Himalayas, Taiwan, and northern Indochina. Obviously, to arrive in the UK, it had been blown drastically off course! It spent most of its time in/on/around a pile of sticks in the wood & feeding on meal worms which someone had put down.
