"Happier of happy though I be, like them I cannot take possession of the sky, mount with a thoughtless impulse, and wheel there, one of a mighty multitude whose way and motion is a harmony and dance magnificent." William Wordsworth
I had hoped to visit Gilfach NNR in May/June but couldn't manage it this year. It had to wait until August. However, I wasn't disappointed. Two of the 1st summer male Redstarts were still around along with a shy female. All three are likely to be from last year's young, returned to breed for their first time. The two males were well into post-breeding moult but their preening activities provided a great opportunity to see that wonderful red rump and wing structure. The two birds are separable by bill shape. One has a fairly noticeable overhanging upper mandible tip, whilst the other doesn't. The female shown here was a bird I found whilst walking around Llangorse Lake - she was rather distant but I was glad to get a shot of her.
