Great Tits (Nesting) 2011 - sun-flower
In 2010, a pair of Great Tits nested in a pile of tyres in my neighbour's garden, just over the fence by my kitchen window. In 2011, a pair returned and I had great fun watching and photographing their progess. The female, with her delicate strip of black down her belly, first went to work collecting beakful after beakful of soft moss. The male, with his much more pronounced black belly stripe and more 'butch' shoulders/neck, was often with her but did nothing of the early nest building. However, he did ensure she was well fed and regularly brought her an assortment of treats ranging from juicy caterpillars to large spiders. I can't remember now whether he ever contributed to the nest directly but he was always close by her, accompanying her on her sorties and tending to her need for food. When the eggs hatched, and the female was still on the chicks, the male continued his food collecting duties. Unfortunately, I was away when the chicks fledged and I didn't see how many the pair produced. All photos were taken through the kitchen window.
